Fans Vote Steve Helman Most Hated Visiting Player In Club History

Stourgate Town Supporters Club has voted Steve Helman the most hated visiting player in the club’s history, ahead of a shortlist of six other long-standing rivals.

Supporters Club chairman Dennis Okafor said the result was not close. “It wasn’t even close. Nobody else got a look in. Everyone remembers what he did to Ray Barnes, and that tackle’s never really been forgotten round here.”

Mr Okafor said members had been asked to nominate and rank opposing players from the past three decades, with voting open to all paid-up members over the summer. Helman, who played for a string of Kent non-league sides during his career, topped every single ballot submitted.

“He’s not even that well known outside Stourgate,” Mr Okafor added. “But here, say his name in the clubhouse and you’ll get a reaction. I wouldn’t recommend anyone murder or attack him though.”

The Supporters Club said it had no immediate plans to inform Mr Helman of the result.

Each year the Supporters Club build an effigy of Helman and hang it from Maggie’s Oak in Stourgate Wood.
